Called to Love Part – 2

1John 4:16 – And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God and God in him.

Our love is not only conditional, it is also mercurial. We love based on feelings and emotions that can change from one moment to the next. Hence we may not be able to comprehend “unconditional” love?

God’s love is unconditional, and it’s not based on feelings or emotions. He doesn’t love us because we’re lovable or because we make Him feel good; He loves us because He is love. He created us to have a loving relationship with Him, and He sacrificed His own Son (who also willingly died for us) to restore that relationship.

Love is the root of all that is of God. To love God is to love His Word and align our life according to what it says. The Pharisees used the scripture on “love” to condemn and destroy people; Jesus used the scriptures to build people up. Jesus used the scripture to forgive the woman of adultery. Do we use scriptures to encourage others and bring them to the light? If we do not have love, we will use scriptures to condemn others.

A preacher can stand up and preach about hell and sin, planting fear in the congregation in the hope that they will change. Another preacher shares God’s love and emphasizes the sacrifice of Jesus and His salvation for us because of His love. Hearing the first preacher may cause a change in the congregation based on fear. But how much better it is when people change because they understand that God loves them just the way they are.

Whenever the Word of God is preached with fear as the basis there will never be a sound relationship with God. When the Word of God is preached with love the person can develop a wonderful personal relationship with God.

God is not selfish and neither is love. Ask yourself, have I been in pursuit of love (God) or have I been pursuing my own selfish will? Selfishness will hinder God’s love from operating in our life. Allow love to overcome your selfishness. Love is the foundation of God’s power. Loving others is not a sign of weakness.
