2Timothy 2:23-24 – But avoid foolish and ignorant disputes, knowing that they generate strife. And a servant of the Lord must not quarrel but be gentle to all, able to teach, patient
Debates and quarrels about Christian doctrine and ministers should be avoided. It is very remarkable how often, and with what seriousness, the apostle cautions Timothy against disputes in religion. Religion consists more in believing and practising what God requires than in subtle disputes. We must be gentle to all, and thereby show that we are subject to the commanding power of the Word.
2Timothy 2:25-26 – In humility correcting those who are in opposition, if God perhaps will grant them repentance, so that they may know the truth, and that they may come to their senses and escape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will.
Those who oppose the truth are to be instructed; for instruction is the scripture-method of dealing with erroneous beliefs. The same God who gives us the discovery of the truth, does by his grace, brings us to acknowledge it. Otherwise our hearts would continue in rebellion against it. We are to confess with our mouths as well as believe in our hearts, and recover from the snare of the devil;
St Paul cautions Timothy about falling into the snare of the devil, by feeling offended by the words spoken by another. Being offended or taking offense means our negative reaction to a situation, circumstance or a comment. The scripture says a person who offends you is a prisoner of Satan and is in Satan’s captivity.
Every time a person does something to offend you he is obeying the will of Satan, not of God’s. In all ignorance, he allows himself to be a bait to draw you into the trap. The moment you respond with offense, you have entered into the trap and now you also are a prisoner of Satan. The victor is Satan, and the number of people in the trap gradually increases if we allow ourselves to be offended. Hence St. Paul tells Timothy to be gentle and not get into arguments with any person as this will only cause trouble for everyone.
