Testimony of Overcoming Temptation

1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV – Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

At the age of 21 I got into the addiction of smoking cigarette; at the age of 22 I got into alcohol. As time passed and I moved abroad I also got into worldly addictions like doping drugs, hashish, weed and pornography. I was a chain smoker and it was difficult to be without smoking for more than two hours. When I don’t smoke for more than two hours I would feel weak and my hands and legs would start shaking, I would get paranoid and angry on silly matters and start yelling at people. I was simply not me!

It was easy for me to come out of alcohol, drugs and rest of the worldly addictions because that never became a habit in me. But I found it very difficult to stop smoking cigarettes. Many advised me to try different options like nicotine chewing gums, e-cigarettes, vaporizer, and bubble gums and so on. Some even said try reducing one cigarette a day. But every time I think of doing it, I end up smoking even more on that day. Some even said you need that ‘Will Power” to quit smoking. On a serious note, I have no idea what that will power is like!

When I first travelled to Goa on 22nd October 2014, I had 20 packs of cigarette with me, which I smoked for the whole night while travelling in the train to Goa. On my first day of the retreat (23rd October, 2014) I used to sneak off into the wilderness during break times and smoke and come back with some gums in my mouth. But the very next day in the morning I saw my cigarette packet was empty and I told my friend that I’m going for a morning jog and started walking 2km towards main road at 6:30 in the morning searching for a shop to buy some cigarettes. No shops were opened at that time and I decided to return to the retreat center as it was already 7:00am and the retreat would start at 7:30am.

On that day I heard Brother Pavan from Yeshua Band preaching. Where he quoted 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 NIV from the Bible and said that “I am the Temple of the Holy Spirit and Jesus wants to dwell inside me”. He then asked a question “Do you want to receive Jesus inside you?” and I said “Yes”; He then asked “Do you want to receive the most high God, King of kings the Lord of Lords inside you?” and I shouted “Yes”. He then asked “well then how clean is your Temple? How clean is your church to invite the King of kings, the Lord of Lords into you?”

That day I decided to Follow Jesus and I said

“Lord I give up everything Lord and I totally surrender to you. Please take control of me and get me out of this mess. Lord I might fall but you lift me up, tie my hand with your hand, pull me, drag me and take me with you Lord. Melt me, Mold me, and make me more like you Jesus!

I have decided to follow you Jesus

No turning back No turning back;

The Cross before me the world behind me

No turning back No turning back;

No one though with me still I will follow

No turning back No turning back”

Since that day I have quit smoking and I was easily able to come out of all my worldly addictions without any side effects or symptoms of quitting. All praise and glory to God alone. This would have not been possible if I had not surrendered to his will upon my life.

2 Corinthians 5:17 – “If anyone is in Christ he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” – Thank you Jesus for I am a new creation in you now.
