John 1:30-34 —— This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’ I did not know Him; but that He should be revealed to Israel, therefore I came baptizing with water.”
And John bore witness, saying, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and He remained upon Him. I did not know Him, but He who sent me tobaptize with water said to me, ‘Upon whom you see the Spirit descending, and remaining on Him, this is He who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ And I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.”
The above scripture shows that John the Baptist did not know that Jesus was the anointed one. But he did know that God had chosen Jesus and Jesus’ purpose was to be revealed during Baptism when the spirit of God came down upon Him. John the Baptist confirmed his testimony and when he did what God told him to do, he then saw the Holy Spirit come down like a dove. It was at this time that Jesus’ ministry began.
Why do we want to be filled with the Holy Spirit?
Obviously, we cannot, in our own energy, accomplish anything on our own. It is Christ Himself — living within us in all of His resurrection power, walking around in our body, thinking with our mind, loving with our heart, speaking with our lips — who will empower us with the Holy Spirit to do great works.
It is not our wisdom, our eloquence, our logic, our good personality, or our persuasiveness which brings people to our Saviour. It is the Son of Man, who came to seek and to save the lost, who sent His Holy Spirit to fill and empower us.
The power of the risen, living, loving, indwelling Christ made known through the Holy Spirit — is still available to us today. It can change our life and enable us to experience the abundant and fruitful life which our Lord promises to all who trust and obey Him.
IF YOU LOOK UP INTO HIS FACE AND SAY,’ YES LORD, WHATEVER IT COSTS’, AT THAT MOMENT HE’LL FLOOD YOUR LIFE WITH HIS PRESENCE AND POWER.
